The Messages in James Cameron’s Avatar Movie

Avatar is also loaded with hidden messages for the viewer: political, environmental, antiwar, spiritual, and religious messages. I watched the movie in IMAX 3D and I would encourage anyone planning to see it to at least see the 3D version.

For the first 90 minutes, you are taken to the lush and gorgeous planet Pandora. You walk among astonishing and beautiful plants you have never seen before. The plants often have an electroluminescence that glow and change as you touch them. The movie screen seems to disappear. You are on Pandora.

The humans are here to mine a mineral Unobtanium, an energy source that the humans need, as earth has been depleted of their oil source. An indigenous people group already lives on Pandora, and the richest deposits of the mineral lie under some floating Hallelujah Mountains, islands sacred to the indigenous Na’vi people. You can guess the rest of the plot. There could be a war that would destroy everything and everyone. And the Na’vi seem to have little in the way of defense. Sound familiar? (Hint: Think of the history of the Native Americans in America.)

One of my favorite stories in the movie is when the Avatar/Human, Jake, is struggling to learn the culture and is surrounded by hundreds of tiny, illuminated, and animated, and floating entities. He is told by his Na’vi friend that these are the sacred “seeds of Eyra” and have a healing property. He is told not to fight them, but to hold out his arms and let them bring him the healing that he needs. Later in the movie as you are walking in Pandora you see thousands of these seeds surrounding you and “filling the theatre”, some only inches from your face. You reach out to touch them, only to realize you must wait and let them touch you. And you experience a sense of healing as you watch.

I liked the quote of Jake, the human/Avatar who is confronting the military strategists. The military strategists have really have sent him into the Na’vi to warn them of the destruction of their world.

“Out there [with the Na’vi] is the real world….in here is the dream,” Jake replies.

And then you watch as the militant humans with their illusion try to destroy the reality as all-out war breaks out. It hurts to watch.

How about your world? Are you in the illusion or the reality?

Illusion versus reality is the theme of my new book: Beyond Illusion: Leading from Reality that we are shipping now. Order it at http://www.creatingnewworlds.org. What does a real leader look like today? Does he or she even exist?

TV Movie: The Path to 9/11

Monday, September 11th, 2006

From my friend Sandra Hampe:

If you did not have an opportunity to watch this evening’s first half of this miniseries, please consider watching the second half tomorrow evening. This email does a good job of presenting the situation. David Cunningham, Director, is the son of Loren Cunningham, Founder of Youth With A Mission. His film The War to End All Wars is, from my perspective, a classic. It’s a great opportunity to better understand the cross and forgiveness. There has been a lot of effort to edit significantly THE PATH TO 9/11. I do not know how much editing actually went on…I will send a link where you can contact ABC with your impressions, support, whatever. We need to get involved standing for what we believe. Sondra

The Da Vinci Code Movie

Cracking the Code

Movies are important part of our culture. The tell stories, carrying myths from one generation to the next. Many Christian leaders have shown us how movies carry basic truths that touch us at the heart level and carry the story of the Redemption in interesting ways.

Saying that, the Da Vinci movie is an example of people caught up in making big money from a bad story. As a researcher, I’ve been taught to may sure that EVERY detail in my story is correct. In researching cities and documenting what I’ve found, one little fact that is not correct can destroy the entire thesis. If one fact is wrong, there is no longer any credibility on any other fact. The thesis is destroyed.

The problem with Brown’s book - and the movie (which I understands follows the book exactly) - is that there are major and multiple errors in the story. The opening location in the museum does not exist in reality, the layout of the Westminster Abby is wrong, the historical facts are wrong, and even his opening facts are wrong. Read our paper if you wish more on this. Brown shoots himself in the foot not once, but over and over again. He destroys his own thesis.

What should the Christian do? First, if you must see the movie don’t go on this opening week. That’s the week Hollywood gets all its statistics on the movie, makes a judgment on its success or not, and makes decisions from that. Wait.

Second, protests don’t help much but give the movie more and free publicity. Pastors and their churches should take the lead here. The story can be used in a sermon (or sermons) to draw apathetic people to church with a little creative advertising. Why is Brown’s story wrong? What is the true story? Why is it true?

What is Brown’s real message and purpose? What is God’s purpose? Which are you going to believe? What does that mean to you?

DeMything the Da Vinci Code Movie

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

With the release date of the Da Vinci Code movie coming up as May 19 in the United States, the film is already stirring up a lot of controversy. Although the book is riff with errors and heresy, it does form a great platform for discussing serious spiritual issues with other people drawn to the film. Ron Howard directs, and Tom Hanks plays the lead researcher. You can find the official site for the film and trailers at:

New Movie about the Church - The Second Chance

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

THE SECOND CHANCE, starring MICHAEL W. SMITH, JEFF OBAFEMI CARR and directed by STEVE TAYLOR is a new movie from Sony Pictures opening in 35 cities nationwide on February 17, 2006. . The film tells the story of a white church in a wealthy suburb that discovers its “outreach” to an inner-city black congregation is creating resentment and distrust. This is the story of how a rebellious son and a street-smart pastor attempt to bridge the gap between their churches and their cultures.

Tony Compolo on the movie:

To say that I enjoyed the film is a vast understatement. I resonated with what I saw in this great piece of work. Anyone who has ever had a ministry in an inner city over an extended period of time, has encountered just about every one of the situations that came out in the film.

It has been interesting to note that we seem to have reached a ‘tipping point’ in contemporary culture, with the film receiving considerable criticism in the secular media for being, as they see it, Christian propaganda. This would not probably not happened several years ago.

Movie: I Walk the Line

Friday, November 25th, 2005

This is a movie of (primarily) ten years in the life of Johnny Cash showing his early years recording at Sun Records and ending 1n 1968 with his on-stage proposal to June Carter. Cash is a legend, and it is hard to imagine anyone even attempting to make a movie of even ten years in his life. This movie does great credit to show one aspect of this decade in detail - Cash’s battle with drugs and the story of what it took from June Carter and others to even save his life. It is a story of redemption.

Joaquin Phoenix plays Cash, and Reese Witherspoon plays June Carter. Both Phoenix and Witherspoon sing their own songs here - there is no dubbing or looping. They both took six months of training for this. Phoenix may not look like the mature Cash I remember, but he nails Cash’s trademark mannerisms and nuances, and does a more than credible job of doing Cash’s baritone growl. Phoenix doesn’t seem to be imitating Cash or acting - he takes on the skin of Cash for a very organic performance. Phoenix was chosen personally by Johnny Cash to take the role in this movie.

The stage performances don’t start until about half-way through the movie, but after that there are many. About the middle of the movie when Phoenix steps to the stage and says “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash” - you believe it. Phoenix is heads-up for an Oscar on this. Witherspoon also plays an excellent June Carter, belting out “Jackson” in the last performance with June’s trademark growl. The on-stage chemistry between the two in the movie is incredible.

Forget the story details when watching this movie and focus on the personalities. The on-stage interaction between the two personalities is also electric.

You can find the Quicktime movie trailer at:

http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplaylist.dll?id=1369895&sdm=web&qtw=640&qth=400

Remember - that is Phoenix singing on the trailer. No dubbing or looping of Cash’s real voice.

Important Movie: Chronicles of Nardia

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media are releasing The Chronicles of Narnia movie on December 9, 2005. This is the first of a collection of stories by C.S. Lewis. Unlike Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings with indirect references to the Gospel, C.S. Lewis used bold analogies that tell the redemption story in a profound way. In the Portland area, the following leading organizations are already endorsing this film:

Mission Portland
International Renewal Ministries (the Prayer Summit people)
KKPZ
Western Seminary

At the national level, Mission America, George Barna, and Focus on the Family are among those endorsing it. Start preparing your church on how your church can use this as a powerful outreach tool.

Andrew Adamson, who directed the Shrek and Shrek2 films, directs the film. Unlike those, however, the film isn’t a cartoon. The CG effects are used to bring the story to life, just as in Lord of the Rings. In fact, Richard Taylor, famous now for his Lord of the Rings work and soon-to-be-released the Legend of Zorro, directed the special effects of Narnia. Yes, New Zealand’s WETA was involved. One of the big challenges, of course, was creating a life-like CG lion for Aslam (The Lion of Judah). Liam Neeson voices Aslam.

Although the film is two months away as this is written, it’s not to early to get resources for your church to use it and begin planning. Here are the web sites for resources:

http://www.narniaresources.com - free resources such as posters, door hangers, etc.

http://www.outreach.com - Free and resources you can customize and purchase.

Christinaity Today Movie Interview

TIME Magazine Article

I’ve been warned that children will understand the film easier than adults. It isn’t, however, just a children’s story. It’s the greatest story ever told.
