Leadership and the New Order

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

In this historic moment, we live caught in a worldview that no longer works and a new one that seems too bizarre to contemplate.

Margaret J. Wheatley, Leadership and the New Science: Discovering Order in a Chaotic World

Nothing changes until you upset what is, until you show people that where they are, the status quo, isn’t working. People build a comfort zone, an illusion, so they don’t have to change. They distort facts, lie, and ignore the facts—anything but change from where they are. The leader must upset the equilibrium; that is, create (and what appears to be) chaos. The new leader speaks and acts into the existing order, upsetting what is and creating chaos. This forces the “system” to reorder to a higher ordered system. This doesn’t make sense from our older leadership models; yet there is a new and higher order that emerges from the disorder. The leader is not doing this just for the sake of creating chaos. Rather, the leader is drawing the followers to a new Place.

When the Good News of the Gospel is alive in any person, whatever their kind of work may be, they become an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressive creature. He or she becomes interesting to other people. They disturb, upset, enlighten, and open ways for better understanding.

In the new paradigm, once the vision is put down (and continues to be put down), the leader then focuses energy not so much in planning, putting down programs, building structures, and evaluating; but rather the leader focuses on building relationships (networks, linkages, dynamic connectedness), and then the leader releases. There is no control. The result appears to the leader (and even the followers) as non-deterministic; but it really does have a pattern. Trying to control will distort the pattern.

The measure of a leader

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

The measure of a leader is not the number of people who serve the leader, but the number of people served by the leader.

The Future of the Church

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

The institutional church, as we know it, is dying. If you talk with almost any church growth leader, they will tell you this.

Today’s Church is incapable of responding to the present moral crisis. It must reinvent itself or face virtual oblivion my mid-21st century.
George Barna, The Second Coming of the Church

In the face of these waves of change, the institutional church in America has two options. Either it will go about its business as usual—and be swallowed up by obsolescence and die by default. Or the church will choose to die—and thus find life. Mike Regele (co-founder and president of Percept Group, Inc.), and Mark Schulz, Death of the Church

The current church culture in North America is on life support. It is living off the work, money, and energy of previous generations from a previous world order.Reggie McNeal, The Present Future: Six Tough Questions for the Church.

This doesn’t mean the church is dead, it is just that the “institutional” church, as we know it, is essentially non-functional. When Reggie McNeal came through Portland a few years ago, he shared with us that only 10% of the Millennials are in church (institutional church) on a Sunday. It’s not that the Millennials don’t have a faith, it is just that the institutional church has failed them and their spiritual needs are met outside of this instituion. A Millennial doesn’t join an organization, he or she joins a vision, a passion, a dream. And the institution they see has none.

What does this mean for the future of the Church. How can the Church recover its mission?

The mission of the Church was given by Christ to his followers in Matthew just before He left us:

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Matt 28:18-20 NKJV

Jesus also left the Holy Spirit to give us the power to claim authority in the name of Jesus. Unfortunately, most of us have lost something that is very important. We have lost much of the vision of what God is doing here, and with it the passion to carry that forward. We aren’t desprite enough.

Fortunately, God is still at work. Massive spiritual awakenings are already occurring at cities and even regions all over the world. Christian leaders such as George Otis, Jr.. Peter Wagner, and others are trying to document these, now in hundreds of cities (and even regions) around the word.

Changes in Washington, D.C.

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Get ready for massive changes in Washington, D.C. next fall.

Start getting ready for the November, 2010 elections. Remember the motto (unless you like being abused): If they’re “IN;” they’re “OUT.”

Remember this on the 2010 Election Day. . .

1. Your U.S. House & Senate have voted themselves $4,700 and $5,300 raises.

2. They voted to NOT give you a Social Security cost of living raise in 2010 and 2011.

3. Your Medicare premiums will go up $285.60 for the 2-years and you will not get the 3% COLA or $660/yr. Your total 2-year loss and cost is $1,600 or $3,200 for husband and wife. Plain enough?

4. Every member of Congress will get an added $10,000 which is putting them very close to $200,000 per year. They’ve exempted themselves from the healthcare changes they wish to enact on us. Sounds like an elite class to me. They should be on the same health and pension plan we are: Social security and Medicare – or they go home.

5. Do you feel taken advantaged of? They vote themselves a raise and better benefits. They only care about WE THE PEOPLE on election day, right? You never did anything about it in the past. The time for action is near!!!!

6. Do you really think that Nancy, Barbara, Patty, Harry, Chris, Charlie, Barney, John Murtha, et al, care about you? SEND THE MESSAGE — You’re FIRED.

7. Our present elected representatives are loyal to their party. They are bribable, do what is in their OWN best interest. They have completely ignored the massive debt this country is in and are increasing it without regard to the taxpayers who will have to pay for it all.

8. President Obama isn’t leading any more. Bernanke (with the help of Congress) shoved billions to Wall Street and corrupt corporations under the motto “they are too big to fail”. That statement is immoral and unethical. Once core values are sacrificed, there is no leadership or vision. As a result, Bernanke should be out of there. Meanwhile, a stimulus plan that was supposed to create jobs didn’t. Most of the money was wasted.

9. Both political parties have tried to build a social medicine plan when both of them are owned by the health industry. One of my senators has received over 1.5 million dollars from the health industry. I can’t trust him to put together a social medicine program for me.

*** THIS IS NOT ABOUT POLITICAL PARTIES!
IN 2010 YOU WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO GET RID OF Up to 1/3 OF THE SENATE AND 100% OF THE HOUSE.
The election in 2010 will be a sea-change to the mindset of any member of Congress who may survive..

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. It is time for you to lead. Send ‘em home. Pass this post on to your friends. As them to stand up. Write to those representing them in Washington.

The Challenge of Haiti – Leadership when the odds are impossible.

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Some time ago (probably a year or so) I was praying with a young woman who was trying to decide if she should go to Haiti back then. As I prayed with her, I asked her one simple question: Where is your burden? When God calls us, He lays a burden on our hearts. There is something that needs to be done. What was God telling her? Now I wonder. Did she go? Was she there when the earthquake struck? What is her story now?

In the Bible, you can see this in Nehemiah’s call. Nehemiah was working as an underemployed cupbearer for a heathen king in a remote land. His friends had been spiritually mapping the Jerusalem area. They are reporting that the people there are in despair, there is no vision, and the nation is in disgrace. At this point Nehemiah has the same information as his friends; but look at the difference. Only Nehemiah has the burden. He can’t eat or sleep for months. He then goes before the king and asks permission to respond. Against all odds, the king gives him permission, provides the resources he needs, and even provides security for his trip to Jerusalem. Nehemih, with God’s help, pulled off what looked like an impossible job in only 52 days.

Pray for the people working there. Give to get them the resources they need. Help where you can, even something as simple as working the phones for a relief organizatin here.

Oregon’s Measure 66 and 67

Friday, January 8th, 2010

One hotly debated topic in Oregon right now is the vote in January on 26 regarding measures 66 and 67.

A vote FOR measure 66 will mean:

• Taxes for wealthy Oregonians (about $250,000 for households, $125,000 for individuals) will increase.

• No income taxes on the first $2400 of unemployment benefits received in 2009.

• The resulting estimated $472 million raised will provide funds for education, health care, public safety, and other services.

• The increases are permanent.

A vote FOR measure 67 will mean:

• The $10 minimum tax for corporations increases to $150.

• The tax rate for many corporations will increase, along with some filing fees.

• As with measure 66, the resulting estimated $472 million raised will provide funds for education, health care, public safety, and other services.

• The increases are permanent.

We urge a NO vote on both of these issues.

• People supporting the taxes say it will only tax the rich. They are wrong. The increase will be passed on to the customers, and you will pay more for gas, groceries, and services.

• It is estimated that the tax will cost Oregon 70,000 jobs, increasing unemployment.

• State spending is increased, not decreased as it should be.

• Small businesses will suffer major damage. If the tax passes, we will immediately increase business costs. Many small businesses will have to close, increasing unemployment. Some businesses will move to Vancouver and other places.

• Measure 66 will cause many small farms in Oregon to close. That means you pay a higher grocery bill and the farmers will be hurt, some losing their farm.

• Voting for these measures will give you the largest tax increase in the history of Oregon. It will give our state the second highest income tax in the nation. It is not a good idea to saddle Oregonians during the largest economic downturn in a generation with the largest tax increase in Oregon’s history.

• If the measures pass, the taxes are retroactive to the first of 2009. You probably didn’t have enough taxes taken out of your salary to cover it. If you are out of work now but worked some in 2009, you are probably going to owe money.

• The Portland Business Alliance urges a NO vote of these measures. So does many of
the Chamber of Commerces: Beaverton, North Clackamas County, Salam, Wilsonville, and many others.

• The Oregonian and many other newspapers in the state urge a NO vote on measures 66 and 67,

• The measures will delay economic recovery in Oregon.

• The legislature ignored tax advice and sided with special interests. Even this vote is riddled with special interest money. Don’t be deceived.

Don’t be fooled. Don’t let the special interests that bought the legislators buy your vote.
Vote on the measures and vote NO on both. Then vote the legislators out that even proposed this nonsense in our tough economic times.

Oregon can pay its bills by managing the money they have better and cutting those salary increases. Here’s an example of how the state can save - companies that are not involved with energy are buying energy tax credits at a profit, cutting into the state income. Wal-Mart, for example, paid 22.6 million last year to the right to clam in 33.6 million in energy tax credits. The state is out the full 33.6 million in tax revenues, money that would have gone through the general fund to schools and health services. And Wal-Mart isn’t alone. Other companies at the top of the list playing this game are Costco and U.S. Bank – two of America’s wealthiest businesses.

Be sure vote. In voting you lead, you make a statement. Encourage others to vote. On issues, be willing share your reasons for why you are voting for or against the measures. For more on real leadership, see http://www.creatingnewworlds.org/beyond.htm.

The Messages in James Cameron’s Avatar Movie

The Messages in James Cameron’s Avatar Movie

Avatar is also loaded with hidden messages for the viewer: political, environmental, antiwar, spiritual, and religious messages. I watched the movie in IMAX 3D and I would encourage anyone planning to see it to at least see the 3D version.

For the first 90 minutes, you are taken to the lush and gorgeous planet Pandora. You walk among astonishing and beautiful plants you have never seen before. The plants often have an electroluminescence that glow and change as you touch them. The movie screen seems to disappear. You are on Pandora.

The humans are here to mine a mineral Unobtanium, an energy source that the humans need, as earth has been depleted of their oil source. An indigenous people group already lives on Pandora, and the richest deposits of the mineral lie under some floating Hallelujah Mountains, islands sacred to the indigenous Na’vi people. You can guess the rest of the plot. There could be a war that would destroy everything and everyone. And the Na’vi seem to have little in the way of defense. Sound familiar? (Hint: Think of the history of the Native Americans in America.)

One of my favorite stories in the movie is when the Avatar/Human, Jake, is struggling to learn the culture and is surrounded by hundreds of tiny, illuminated, and animated, and floating entities. He is told by his Na’vi friend that these are the sacred “seeds of Eyra” and have a healing property. He is told not to fight them, but to hold out his arms and let them bring him the healing that he needs. Later in the movie as you are walking in Pandora you see thousands of these seeds surrounding you and “filling the theatre”, some only inches from your face. You reach out to touch them, only to realize you must wait and let them touch you. And you experience a sense of healing as you watch.

I liked the quote of Jake, the human/Avatar who is confronting the military strategists. The military strategists have really have sent him into the Na’vi to warn them of the destruction of their world.

“Out there [with the Na’vi] is the real world….in here is the dream,” Jake replies.

And then you watch as the militant humans with their illusion try to destroy the reality as all-out war breaks out. It hurts to watch.

How about your world? Are you in the illusion or the reality?

Illusion versus reality is the theme of my new book: Beyond Illusion: Leading from Reality that we are shipping now. Order it at http://www.creatingnewworlds.org. What does a real leader look like today? Does he or she even exist?
