Insights on our website

Just a few insights on this website. This blog is a part of: http://www.creatingnewworlds.org. Our overall vision is to develop this web site for leaders seriously interested in the transformation of themselves, their community, their nation, and the world.

Right now this site is driven, in part, from a database of 456 quotations. The main page, at the bottom, pulls one quotation from the database at random. As you move through the web site, quotations are pulled up based on the topic. Eventually we will have the photos pulled up from the database the same way. The web site has been there for years, but since the first of this year the web traffic has increased 350%. If you want to know how to do a web site like that for yourself, your church, or organization contact us. That’s out business.

If you want to see the entire quotation list, go to the library on the main menu, choose “Other”, and then choose the all quotes option. The home page pulls only one quote at a time. That quote is in white at the bottom of the page near the bottom of the page. Press F5 with the home page displayed, and the page will refresh with a new a new quote. As you move through the site, other pages pull up quotes from the database by topic.

Technical Notes:
Right now the web system is driven, in part, from a MySQL database. One table in the database contains all the quotations. There are some 456 quotations in the database as this is written.

The database is displayed using Cold Fusion programming on the web site. The programming is proprietary so you won’t see it, even if you examine the source code of a displayed page. Google and search engines can’t see the code, either. The result is that Google and other search engines index on the same page contents that you see. That gives us good positioning in the search engines – and may be the very strategy that enables our site to be successful. Some of the Cold Fusion pages have the highest hit rate on the site – such as the purpose and vision quote pages.

The quotations are initially stored in a local Microsoft Access database table. We then can use this database for quotations in our writing and speaking. This quotation table can be imported to the web site to update the database as necessary.

Another table in the same database contains all the URLs for the pictures. This will allow us, in the near future, to pull up pictures for the pages in the same way, with the pictures based on the page topic. This will give us a very dynamic web site, with portions changing even as you return to the same page.

If you are using an iPad, some aspects of the main menu don’t work. Steve Jobs has an NIH (not invented here) attitude and doesn’t support Flash and other advanced features that Windows supports. You may also miss the great slide show on the main page. To accommodate users that are stevejobs-challenged, we will add a simple menu at the bottom of the page for many of the pages. Give us time (or get a real computer).
