In
June of 1989 Carl was suddenly paralyzed from the shoulders down in about
24 hours while vacationing in Switzerland. On his return to
the states, the doctors
told him his neural system was destroyed and he would never walk again.
A little over a year later he walked unaided. Just as he began celebrating
his healing, his wife was diagnosed with leukemia. She didn’t survive,
even with a bone marrow transplant.
From these experiences Carl began a spiritual journey for his
own personal healing, traveling to prayer conferences to learn from intercessory
prayer
leaders about healing and the relationship of prayer to healing. At the same
time he looked at the life of Christ, only to discover Christ seemed to have
no consistent strategy in healing. Or did He?
Jesus made it quite plain that this same authority and power he had in healing
is available today.
After Carl battled the loss of his neural system and then his wife, he began
a journey to the best of prayer warriors to find the secret. In In Pursuit
of Healing, Carl shares what he discovered.

One of the movies that has had the most impact on my life is
the movie The Illusionist. After watching this, I was sharing with
a small group how much impact this movie had on my life.
They asked me why. I said I didn't know. I needed to watch it again to see
why.
The movie is based on a book. The book,
in turn, is based on a real event in history. The scenery is beautiful. A
real castle in Czechoslovakia was used for some of the filming.. The costumes
are all beautiful. You feel as if you are there in the story. The music has
won awards. The acting is over-the-top - it should have won awards.
The movie begins with a flashback to the
illusionist as a boy playing with a girl. Puppy love. She, however, is of
noble birth and destined to be a princess or queen. He is a commoner. That
is like mixing oil and water. Her father comes with his solders and drags
the daughter away, forbidding the young man to play with her again. He packs
his suitcase and leaves town that night.
The movie actually begins fifteen years
later as the young man - now a handsome young man - returns to Vienna. He
is now a famous illusionist and performing at the theater in Vienna. The
reviews of his performances are ecstatic. One night the crown prince and
his intended show up for performance. You're thinking ahead of me, aren't
you?
After some distance through the story,
aan incredible tragic event happens. You are shocked. You are screaming.
This is not the way the script is supposed to go. They've got the wrong script.
I don't like this movie. But you can't move from your chair.
Ever been there in your life? I was there
when my wife died. God, this isn't the right script. I don't like the script.
Give me another script. All God would say is that I hadn't seen the last
act.
Near the end of the movie you see the police inspector walking
down the lonely road. Everything is gone. His vision is shot. Everything he
had dreamed of is gone. Nothing left. It is then you see
a small boy come up and gives the inspector the first clue to the reality.
And as the final scenes of the movie pass before your eyes, you see what really
happened. And you scream and fall out of your chair. You've been tricked.
Isn't that like the Emmaus road story
in Luke? Remember those two depressed followers walking down that lonely
road? They are talking about the events of the past weekend after the crucifixion.
Everything they had dreamed about, their visions, everything they had believed
in was shot to pieces. They were expecting a king that would overthrow the
Romans and restore the Israelite nation to its former glory again. As they
shared their lost dreams, a stranger comes up to join them. Trapped in their
illusions, they did not recognize it was Jesus. Not until they broke bread
with Him that evening. Then, the Bible says, their eyes were opened.
Where is the illusion in your life?
