Why Research?

by Carl Townsend

The specific goal of spiritual research is always evangelism.

Research has four purposes:

  • Research builds vision. From the vision flows motivation and purpose.
  • Research builds unity. A single church, investing in research, can then use what it discovers to help other churches in the area build vision and draw unity to the vision from this. A region builds unity with other regions from its research and sharing.
  • Research enables the vision to be accomplished. Without research, we don't know the context or need into which the Gospel must be presented. Christ always brought the gospel in terms of the other's needs.
  • Research enables the setting of realistic goals. Once you've researched to identify the need (context) and state of the church, you can set realistic objectives in terms of this information. Don't, however, be like the Israel spies of Numbers 12 that lost the vision from the research, never realizing what God had in mind as their goal.
