During the three years from 1989 to 1992, I experienced two incredibly deep spiritual journeys. First, in June of 1989 I was suddenly paralyzed by a virus in Zermatt, Switzerland and was told by the doctors I would never walk again. I walked again over a year later, unassisted. Just as I started walking again (1991), my wife started a battle with leukemia, and even with a bone marrow transplant I lost her a little over a year later.

In both of these, I walked through some very deep waters. With the first, I really believed if I had enough faith I could walk again. I read the Acts 3 story of the lame man several times every day until I walked again. I had to know how that lame man in the Bible walked. Then, when my wife had leukemia, we bought the same vision-only she didn't get well. I had been praying for her. Friends had been praying for her. The family had been praying for her. The church had been praying for her. People around the world prayed for her. Then we lost her. She was one of the greatest gifts God had ever given me. It's not fair for someone to give you a gift and then take it back. God wasn't even being ethical, in my mind. God sets the game and the rules, however. Not us. What happened? Was my faith lacking? Did I need more faith? I could see in the Bible where Jesus was constantly chiding his disciples for their lack of faith. Was I at the same place? What a guilt trip!

I did realize, however, that the problem was one of prayer. I didn't know enough about prayer. There was really no one to blame but myself. I would need to travel to the best of prayer conferences and sit at the feet of the best pray-ers in the world to learn some things about prayer. What I didn't realize was that now that I had this insight from God, the Enemy was going to launch his best attack yet. The Enemy knew prayer worked.
